About Me

I was raised in a family of science and art, my father a physician and mother an artist. While never pushed, my parents influenced my interests by their examples and their love of study and exploration. During medical school, the subjects I enjoyed the most were physiology and pharmacology. Anesthesiology is really the clinical application of both of these fields of study.

Early in my educational training, I developed a love for the biological sciences and by the age of 16, knew that I wanted to pursue a career in medicine. In college I was interested in the influences of the environment upon health issues and graduated with a degree in Rural Health Delivery Systems, from U.C. Davis. While in medical school, I pursued additional studies and research in the graduate school of Pharmacology, with an emphasis on clinical toxicology. At one point during my medical school training I thought that I might become a Clinical Toxicologist and run a poison control center, however after taking a rotation in anesthesiology I found that this clinical discipline provided me with the academic and medical training I desired. Anesthesiology requires the clinical application of pharmacology and physiology along with a broad and deep understanding of many disciplines within internal medicine as well. I did my postgraduate training in anesthesiology at Stanford University. While on a rotation at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, I met my future wife, also a physician, who after 15 years of practicing traditional western primary care medicine, went back and trained for 4 years in traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture. It has really opened my eyes to alternative forms of medicine.

After my residency at Stanford, I did a fellowship in Neuro-surgical Anesthesia at UC San Francisco Medical Center. My first job after finishing this fellowship was at Kaiser Redwood City, a neuro-surgical center of excellence, however after about two years I was lured away into private practice, in Los Gatos where I stayed for more than 10 years. This practice included a high volume of complex spinal reconstruction cases, and over time I helped to develop a special program aimed at the elimination of blood transfusions during complex surgical procedures (Transfusion Free Medicine Program).

Eventually in 1998, I moved my practice back to Kaiser Permanente, where I have happily been providing care for my patients ever since. I think that Kaiser has moved way ahead of the competition in their ability to provide access and state-of-the-art medical care for their patient population. Additionally I was happy to leave the headaches of private practice behind and concentrate only on patient care.

While I enjoy all aspects of Anesthesiology, I have special interests in Anesthesia for neuro-surgical and spinal procedures with additional interests in preoperative medical evaluations and management.

On Personal Note

I love cooking and enjoy preparing exotic meals with my wife. I am a collector of records (mostly jazz), an avid audiophile. I also enjoy swimming, rock climbing, and hiking.

My Philosophy of Care

My philosophy of care is to provide the best combination of evidenced-based medicine and a personal approach to the management of my patients. Medicine is not an exact science and a physician should help the patient to have realistic expectations.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
