An important part of being your physician is understanding who you are. My colleagues and I have developed our home pages so you can e-mail me, check your lab results, make an appointment, access our many online programs any time it's convenient for you. So you and your family can take care of your health and still have time for the rest of your life. Thank you for allowing us to participate in your care.

My Background

I grew up in New York and Southern California. I have known since I was a teenager that I wanted to pursue a career as a surgeon. In studies, exposure to neurosciences has led to a lifelong fascination with the brain and spinal cord. It is my privilege to work with colleagues in my field to help take care of patients with neurosurgical diseases. I have particular interest in complex spinal disease and tumors of the nervous system including the pituitary, skull base, and intrinsic brain tumors.

I went to school in UC Berkeley studying biochemistry. This time was a great life and science experience for me helping to shape my approach to the art of medicine. I began to understand the medical diseases of our society affect individual people, their loved ones, and our society as a whole. Medical school followed at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and I also earned a Masters of Public Health. This was a great experience and I will always cherish the time meeting patients literally from all over the world, of all cultures and backgrounds. My residency in neurosurgery was completed at University of Southern California LA County Medical Center where I was fortunate to learn from many of the leaders and pioneers in neurosurgery and all of its subspecialties. Finally, I completed a fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center concentrating on all types of tumors of the central nervous system including eloquent cortex intrinsic brain tumors, spine tumors, pituitary, and skull base tumors.

Roles & Responsibilities

My role is to help guide the patient through their difficult problem. I wish to help them understand their disease, what our knowledge of it is, and help guide them to choose the appropriate treatment for this. I strive to provide the latest techniques with a humanistic approach. A team effort with my colleagues, the patient and their family to tackle the problem is emphasized.

My Staff

Medical assistants, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners in our office will help facilitate your care. My colleagues in neurosurgery and orthopedic spine surgery regularly meet to discuss our difficult cases. We strive to provide a multidisciplinary team effort to take care of patients.

On a Personal Note

I have been married since 1996 and my wife and I have 4 children. My immediate and extended families provide great support and are a source of inspiration to me. We are extremely happy to call Northern California and Sacramento our home and community.

My family is my main hobby and interest when away from work. With my wife and children we like to play tennis, golf, basketball, swim, and play videogames. I enjoy music from various eras and cultures from all over the world. I truly enjoy just hanging out with friends engaging in stimulating conversation and debate.
