My Profession and Why I Chose It

When anesthesia was invented late in the 19th century, surgery without pain was viewed as the single greatest contribution to humanity of all time. The art of providing anesthesia involves a blend of application of specific knowledge, exercise of clinical judgement, and performance of a myriad of technical skills. I chose anesthesia as I have an affinity for more technical and manually oriented activities and because I enjoyed learning anatomy, pharmacology and physiology while at medical school.

Characteristics of patients presenting for either minor or major surgery can range anywhere between the pediatric and geriatric age group, from healthiest to sickest. A career in anesthesiology is truly at the intersection of all medical disciplines. Anesthesiology is a consultation practice for the most part, exercised in conjunction with a surgeon and/or an internist. Constant vigilance and decision–making in a timely fashion is of utmost importance for the safe conduct of anesthesia. Hence, an anesthesiologist is a crucial and integral part of the surgical team. Making decisions under pressure and performing multiple tasks simultaneously is intensely challenging but the satisfaction patients express when their pain is eased is truly rewarding.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
