My Specialty and Why I Chose It

I am a medical oncologist and hematologist. This means I treat patients who are stricken with cancer or who have blood disorders. I decided to do this because of the special challenges that cancer presents: understanding the disease, the fear of the diagnosis and the difficulty of the treatment. I was also intested in the opportunities to understand cancer, a disorder of cell growth, and to know how we grow and develop. I have come to learn that to treat patients with cancer is to know and be inspired by courageous people in their struggle against the disease.

My Practice Philosophy

While I believe the ultimate goal is cure - that is, to eradicate all cancer cells from the body, I realize that this goal, with our current understanding of cancer and current available treatment modalities, is still not attainable for everyone. So, it is equally important to alleviate symptoms related to the cancer or to treatment. I was taught in medical school that a physician goal should be "Cure sometimes. Relieve often. Comfort always". That motto has served me well.

My Tenure with Kaiser Permanente

I have been a part of Kaiser Permanente for since 2000. I was a hospitalist from 2000 to 2002, and a medical oncologist since 2005.

Why I Like Practicing Medicine at Kaiser Permanente

Treating cancer requires many specialties including surgery, radiation oncology, medical oncology, radiology, pathology, pharmacology, primary care, gastroenterology, endocrinology, cardiology, infectious disease, etc. Kaiser Permanente offers a unique integration of all these specialties that allows us to deliver comprehensive care efficiently.

My Professional Interests and Affiliations

I am a member of the American Society of Hematology

On a Personal Note…

My family moved to Sacramento in 1986. I attended high school here, went to college in the Bay Area, went to medical school in Southern California, and then returned to Sacramento for my medical training. I live in the Elk Grove area with my wife and two children.
