I decided in my youth that I wanted to pursue a career in medicine. The opportunity to help alleviate pain and suffering and the intellectual challenge that the practice of medicine offers helped me to know that this was the right career for me. I have never been disappointed with my choice. I continue to find medicine a gratifying career for those same reasons that interested me as a boy.

I initially started my residency training in the field of internal medicine, but after two years I realized that anesthesiology would be a more satisfying career for me. My interest in physiology and pharmacology made this medical specialty a natural fit for me. I find the operating room environment stimulating and rewarding. It is gratifying for me to see the results of medical decisions that I make within minutes rather than in weeks or months.

I feel fortunate to be able to practice anesthesiology at Kaiser Permanente. Perhaps the aspect I most enjoy is being part of a collaborative team that works together to take care of our patients. This team work is particularly evident and important in the operating rooms where anesthesiologists, surgeons, nurses, and technicians work side by side each day.

As an anesthesiologist it is vital that I understand all of intricacies of my patient’s medical conditions. But I believe that the best physicians know more about their patients than just what diagnoses they have and what medicines they take. The better we as physicians know our patients the better we are able to help heal them. My goal is to treat all of my patients as more than just a medical record number with a diagnosis.

While I love my profession, I also find great happiness in my life outside of Kaiser Permanente. My wife and four children are an anchor for me. I love to vacation with my family, read, and golf when I have the time. I feel fortunate to have been able to pursue my life long goal of the practice of medicine and to have a gratifying personal life outside of Kaiser.
