Greetings! Welcome to my home page!

About Me & My Philosophy of Care

I was born in Hong Kong, China and I immigrated with my family to the United States when I was 15 years old. Learning a new language while assimilating into a new environment was a challenge, but on this land of opportunity, I quickly realized that I could acheive any goals that I had in mind with hard work, dedication, and perseverance.

The same philosophy has guided me well in my practice of anesthesiology. I joined Kaiser Permanente right after my completion of a residency in anesthesiology at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Medical Center in 1993. Kaiser has been an ideal place for me to practice medicine because it allows me to provide medical care without undue influence from third party payors and a constant concern for the financial bottom line. I never feel restrained to give my patients what are necessary for their medical care.

My medical interests include ambulatory anesthesia, obstetrical anesthesia, and cardiac anesthesia. I am particularly fond of the medical management of pain, the fifth vital sign after blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate, and temperature. I find great satisfaction in rendering rapid pain relief by an epidural to a laboring mother grimacing with every painful contraction. I also enjoy administering surgical anesthesia to patients in the outpatient settings where they will be reunited with their family within hours after their surgery is completed. The joy of getting a simple "thank you" from patients who have just awaken in the recovery room but did not even realize that their surgery is already over is tremendous. Also, caring for critically ill patients during open heart surgery adds another layer to my professional satisfaction.

In my free time, I earned a law degree and passed the California Bar Exam in 2006. Although I do not practice law presently, I believe that a working knowledge in law is a valuable complement to my medical practice down the road.

To make all this possible, I am blessed to have the company of a wonderful wife, Nancy, and two beautiful daughters, Aileen and Sabrina. They are the pillars of my emotional as well as physical support. We enjoy reading and watching movies together, and having field trips to the city or to the country or wherever our spontaneous desire would guide us. Click here to see some pictures of My Family.

Our entire Anesthesiology Department and I want to be certain that all of your concerns are addressed. If you forget to ask a question during your pre-operative office visit, please call 916-688-2745.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
