About Me

I first became interested in cleft palate /craniofacial speech disorders when I was an undergraduate at Southwest Texas State University and volunteered for a mission trip to Piedras Negras, Mexico. This experience made a lasting impression on me. Two years later, I received a B.S. in Communication Disorders and then an M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology from Texas Tech Health Sciences Center. In July 2004, I took a leap of faith and moved to Southern California for a Clinical Fellowship position at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. I primarily worked in the outpatient Hearing & Speech Clinic but also covered inpatient rehab and acute, as needed. During that time, I had the opportunity to work as part of CHLA’s Craniofacial Team. I soon realized that I wanted to specialize in this clinical area. And taking that initial “leap of faith” also led me to meeting my husband, Eric.

In June 2008, we relocated to the Bay Area where I joined the Genetics Department at Kaiser Oakland Medical Center. My primary role is Speech Pathology Coordinator for the Craniofacial Clinics in Oakland and Sacramento. I provide craniofacial speech evaluations and consultations. As a craniofacial speech pathologist, I develop speech treatment plans for my patients and provide resources for families. I also provide prenatal speech consultations for parents expecting a baby with a prenatal diagnosis of cleft lip. For me, this is one aspect of my job that I find very rewarding.

My role in the Craniofacial Clinic enables me to collaborate with the interdisciplinary medical team. It is a pleasure to work with colleagues who are so dedicated to treating children with cleft lip/palate and other craniofacial conditions.

Aside from work, I cherish spending time with my husband and my family. I love outdoor activities, including running, hiking and bike riding. I also enjoy traveling and theatre.

An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
