About Me

Welcome to the Pediatric Pulmonary Division at the Oakland Medical Center. I have been caring for children with pulmonary problems since 1978. Both my partner, Thomas Breese, and myself are active as clinical faculty at both Oakland Children’s Hospital and the University of California at San Francisco.

I went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill majoring in Zoology. I missed Michael Jordan by just two years. I then attended the University of Florida Medical School where I became interested in Pediatric Pulmonary medicine for the first time. I spent three years in Houston, Texas at the Baylor College of Medicine Texas Children’s Hospital for my Pediatric Residency. The first year of my fellowship was at the Cardiovascular Research Institute at UCSF. I then returned to Houston for the second year of my Pediatric Pulmonary Fellowship.

I take care of all aspects of Pediatric Pulmonary medicine including Cystic Fibrosis, Asthma, Chronic Lung Disease, Apnea, Sleep Disorders, Exercise intolerance, and Neuromuscular Diseases. I am the Center Director of the Northern California Kaiser Cystic Fibrosis Teaching and Research Center. My video "Your Child and Asthma" is available in four languages at the health education centers. It won a National Freddie Award in 1999 from the Time Corporation International Health and Medical Film Competition. I am also an acupuncturist.

My wife, Dr. Linda Beets-Shay, is a Pediatric Dermatologist. We have three energetic children. I spend most of my free time running around to school activities, sports practices, and music lessons. I like all types of music, all sports (especially swimming and snorkeling), and love to travel.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
