My Biography

Medical School: Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA
Internship/Residency: Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA
Fellowship: University of California, San Francisco, CA
Joined Kaiser Permanente Medical Group: 2000
Board Certification:
- Surgery, American Board of Surgery
- Vascular Surgery, American Board of Surgery

I chose the field of vascular surgery because it combines both a surgical and medical approach to patient care. As a surgical specialty, vascular surgery provides immediate results, is extremely challenging and allows for creativity and imagination. However, unlike many surgical specialties, vascular surgery requires following patients on a long-term basis, thus deepening my connection with the patient as well as with a team of multi-disciplinary providers.

I joined KP five years ago and chose to practice here for several reasons. Kaiser allows me to practice medicine and concentrate exclusively on patient care without the additional concerns of managing a medical practice/business. As a result, I have more time to spend with my family, particularly since my wife is a surgeon as well. In addition, from an ethical standpoint, I can provide care to each patient without the financial constraints that can sometimes be placed on physicians lacking the enormous support network Kaiser offers.

My practice philosophy comes from both my experiences in medical school and from my training at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and UCSF, as well as my own personal ethical, moral and spiritual views. One mentor at the MGH, Dr. Leslie Ottinger, has particularly influenced me. Dr. Ottinger treated each and every one of his patients with immense respect, compassion and dedication without regard to financial reward or concern. In my practice I hope to emulate these values.

I enjoy reading, music, gardening, hiking, sailing and mountain biking in my leisure time.

For your scheduled appointment, please try to bring an updated list of medications and try to arrive a bit early, as parking can sometimes be an issue.

As a surgeon, I take appointments by referral. If you do not already have a referral, I suggest you call our appointment/advice line at (650) 742-2100 to make an appointment with your personal physician. To make an appointment in our sub-specialty department, please call (650) 742-2167.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
