About Me
As a son of a college professor, I have lived in several areas of the country, and learned to appreciate the diversity of our great nation. The family moved to Southern California from Virginia in 1964, and I grew up in Orange County. I later attended UCLA, earning a bachelors degree in Philosophy, and was accepted to UCSF’s School of Pharmacy.
In 1973, while studying at UCSF, I began to volunteer at the Height Ashbury Free Clinics. There, I worked in their little dispensary, and later as a student, and then as a paid staff member, worked in the dispensary at their Detoxification, Rehabilitation, and Aftercare Project (Now Substance Abuse Treatment Services). I practiced there for 26 years, running the dispensary, detoxifying patients from drugs and alcohol, and teaching pharmacy students from UCSF in a clinical rotation for 20 of those years.
In 2005, I left the Clinics, and took a job at Kaiser Permanente, where I continue to deal in quality of life issues for the membership here. I hope to be able to apply some of the lessons and compassion I learned in working with a diverse population at Height Ashbury to better serve an equally diverse patient population at Kaiser.
Away From the Office
As long-time residents of the Bay Area, my wife and I enjoy the many different scenic, historical, and cultural places and events constantly taking place around the state. I have a daughter who is a senior at UC Berkeley, of whom we are very proud. As much as possible we enjoy taking short trips around the area, be it for an afternoon or a weekend. Otherwise, we enjoy doing things with family as much as possible, and enjoying our pets, a cat, a tortoise, and two dogs.
