Why did I choose to be a Health Educator?

Ever since I was a child I have always enjoyed science and math. I especially enjoyed human anatomy and physiology. Growing up, I remember learning about health while interpreting for my mother at her doctor’s visits. Sometimes treatment for her involved medication, reassurance and advice. I always was intrigued about the causes of illnesses and how my mother could prevent them. As I learned more about health, I became fascinated with how our bodies work and how we and others can have both a positive and negative impact on our overall health. I decided that I wanted to work in the health care field to help individuals understand how the body functions and how to prevent diseases and enjoy a healthy lifestyle. As a Health Educator, I am able to help members find simple ways to improve their health. It is very satisfying when members share how they have improved their quality of life. Improvement brought about by the application of knowledge exemplified by making healthier and positive choices in their lives.

Why did I choose to practice in Kaiser Permanente?

I have been a Kaiser Permanente member since childhood. During the summer prior to starting college, I worked at Kaiser Permanente Santa Teresa in the maternity ward. It was wonderful being surrounded by the happiness and awe of new parents as they held their babies. I knew then that I wanted to work in the field of women’s health. I continued school and worked at various non-profit community health clinics working with the underserved community. My passion was working with pregnant women and their families enrolled in the Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program providing information and support. Many women faced many challenges and were grateful for the support they received through their prenatal care. I learned a lot from my patients and am thankful that they allowed me to be part of their pregnancies. In 2000, I left the Indian Health Center and began working at Kaiser Permanente Santa Teresa as a Maternal Health Educator. Although I left many friends behind, I was ecstatic to join Kaiser Permanente. I wanted to continue to provide personalized care and support to expectant families just as I had received as a Kaiser Permanente member.

My Education and Training

I attended San Jose State University, San Jose, CA. My skills and training also include Human Immunodeficiency Virus / Sexually Transmitted Diseases (HIV/STD) Counseling, lactation education and facilitating the Healthy Families Parenting Program. I am the Healthy Beginnings Site Coordinator for Modesto and serve on the Domestic Violence Task Forces.

My Philosophy of Care

As a Health Educator, my role is to provide information to members to assist them in being healthy and staying healthy. Information given in a caring and compassionate manner is the key in helping improve one’s health. Each individual is a unique being with unique life experiences. Acknowledging everyone’s uniqueness is essential in meeting the needs of each member towards their achievement of overall health. And of course, a positive attitude and lots of laughter are important to have a healthy life.

More About Me

I am a first generation Mexican-American born and raised in San Jose. I am the eldest of six children. I moved to Modesto in 2004. I have a son, Cristian, and a daughter, Kayla. During my free time, I enjoy visiting family, bible studying, traveling, attending theatrical productions, and photography.

Thank you for visiting my home page. Your comments and suggestions are always welcome and I look forward to seeing you.
