Introduction
Thank you for visiting my home page. I have obtained my medical education and initial surgical training in Moscow, Russia (former USSR). I arrived to the US in 1990 to work in a surgical research laboratory at Loyola University, Chicago and decided to stay on. I have traveled a long road prior to arriving to Kaiser Oakland in November of 2008: repeated surgical training at the University of Kentucky, completed Advanced Laparoscopy Fellowship and worked as an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Texas San Antonio, and spent 5 years in private practice at the Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in Oakland.
Professional Interest
I am a board certified general surgeon, but I am focusing my professional interests on the surgery of the gastrointestinal tract, both open and laparoscopic. This includes surgery of the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon and rectum, pancreas and liver. My passion is clearly surgery of the pancreas, a rather obscure organ that manufactures digestive enzymes and many hormones, including insulin. Pancreatic ailments that require surgery include acute and chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, and endocrine tumors of the pancreas. In addition to being a clinician, I conduct and enjoy clinical research and teaching of surgical residents. I hold a position of Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery, UCSF-East Bay; I am a Fellow of American College of Surgeons and a member of multiple surgical societies such as Society for Surgery for the Alimentary Tract, Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, Pancreas Club, American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, and many others.
Why Kaiser?
I joined Kaiser Permanente because I wanted to be free from economic and business hassles of private practice and to be able to focus on patient care. As a fully integrated system with a superb electronic medical record database, Kaiser Permanente allows you to easily communicate with any physician within the Kaiser system and have instant access to any tests such as labs, biopsy results, x-rays, and CAT scans.
Practice Philosophy
I would like to summarize my practice philosophy with two things: professional excellence and compassion. Maintaining professional excellence and delivering the top notch medical care to my patients is my number one priority. Yet, as a performer of “healing arts”, I strongly believe that compassion, which I define as being able to understand somebody else’s pain, is equally important. I would like to quote my grandfather who was a doctor in Russia: “All doctors should get sick from time to time so they can understand what their patients have to go through.”

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
