My Biography

The original reason I came to California was to attend Kaiser Permanente’s manual orthopedic residency program. I liked the atmosphere here and decided to stay. Doctors here respect physical therapists’ knowledge, and I have the autonomy to develop treatment plans that are in the best interests of the patients.

The centralized set-up we have at Kaiser Permanente means that all of our clinical and specialty departments are integrated, and that includes labs, tests, and values. All resources that providers need to deliver optimal care are in one place. Health Connect, our electronic charting tool, is a vast improvement over outdated paper systems, and greatly reduces the opportunity for human error. Health Connect enables providers to reach timely decisions in a streamlined process.

In my practice I see a broad patient demographic, featuring a spectrum of issues. I never know what’s going to come through the door next! Our doctors are making good, appropriate referrals to me, which makes my job easier. Kaiser patients are motivated to participate in their own care and willing to do what I ask of them. My area of special interest is spine patients. Their cases are a bit more challenging and complex, and involve more problem solving. At the medical center level, I sit on the Quality Assurance and Workplace Safety groups, and on We Care, a local physical therapy committee.

I work out at the gym four times per week and try to watch my intake of inappropriate foods. It’s always going to be easier to choose to modify your lifestyle than to have it forced on you by disease or another dire situation. In my spare time I like to ski, cook, visit Hawai’i, and read spy novels, espionage fiction, and medical thrillers. My wife is also a clinician, involved in the laboratory aspects of practice, and we have a spoiled Labrador Retriever named Fanny!

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
