Welcome to My Home Page!
As a behavioral medicine specialist in the Martinez medical facility (200 Muir Road, Martinez, CA 94553), I work directly with your providers in the Department of Medicine. I am a licensed clinical psychologist and provide services to medical patients dealing with emotional/psychological issues related to medical problems, general stress, anxiety, depression, chronic pain and domestic violence. I work closely with your primary care providers in monitoring any medications that you make be taking related to your emotional well-being. I also function as a liaison between the Medicine Department and other departments, such as Psychiatry and Health Education, often making referrals to these departments as appropriate. I particularly enjoy co-facilitating Multifit group appointments for cardiac patients and providing cognitive screening/testing for patients with memory problems.
I enjoy my job in behavioral medicine immensely. I find that even the brief appointment times allocated for working with patients can be very helpful in assisting people during a difficult situation, when a combination of support, active listening and recommending changes as needed can provide many people with what they need at the time. The relationship between any mental health professional and the client is of utmost importance in being able to be helpful to the patient. Therefore, I strive to be empathic, genuine and honest with the people with whom I work.
I began working in the mental health field in 1994, first as a student counselor in a middle school in Berkeley, followed by a year of training in a psychiatric hospital providing brief psychotherapy and psychodiagnostic testing for children, adolescents and adults. My internship was in the Department of Psychiatry at Children’s Hospital in Oakland, where I worked both with outpatients and patients hospitalized for medical reasons. I received my postdoctoral training at Kaiser Permanente in a local mental health department, providing psychotherapy and neuropsychological testing for children, adolescents and adults. I was subsequently hired to work on the Child and Family Team in Walnut Creek (primarily providing neuropsychological and psychodiagnostic testing) and then in the newly developed Department of Behavioral Medicine in 1999, where I have since continued to work.
