My Biography

I'm a native San Franciscan with Irish and Hispanic roots who was raised in the Sunset district. My parents became Kaiser Health Plan members shortly after WW II, making me a Health Plan member since birth. Our family used to get its care at both the Geary Street (SF) and Grand Avenue (SSF) facilities.

After graduating from Lincoln High School, I attended City College of San Francisco where I earned a degree in registered nursing. I became acquainted with nurse anesthetists and the challenging practice of nurse anesthesia while working as an operating room nurse at a Veterans Hospital. I decided to return to college and study anesthesia at Loma Linda University in Southern California.

I returned to the Bay Area and accepted a position as a staff nurse anesthetist at the Kaiser Oakland Medical Center after finishing my degree in anesthesia and obtaining my national certification as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). In 1981 I started working at the South San Francisco Medical Center. We served a much smaller number of members here compared to Oakland, and I preferred the "small town" feel of this campus. Although our medical center staff and the number of members we serve have grown significantly since 1981, many of us in the operating room - anesthetists, nurses and surgeons - have worked together for many years now. As team members we have watched and encouraged each other's professional and personal growth.

I grew in a way that led me to take time off from my twenty-five year career in health care and pursue another interest. I moved to Ohio in 2000 to complete a master's degree in theological studies (MTS) with an emphasis in ethics.

Upon my return home in 2002 I accepted the position of Chief Nurse Anesthetist and Anesthesia Department Manager at South San Francisco. As Department Manager I oversee the smooth running of departmental operations in addition to personally administering anesthetics on a daily basis. I particularly enjoy administering pediatric anesthesia, helping to make our youngest members' time in surgery both safe and less stressful. I also serve on the hospital's Bioethics Committee where I have an opportunity to use my ethics education in a more formal setting.

I strongly believe in the team approach to anesthetic care that we practice in all Kaiser hospitals which takes advantage of the expertise of both anesthesiologists (MDs) and nurse anesthetists (CRNAs). The team model has been shown to deliver greater safety in anesthesia care. I am proud of the dedication and professionalism that we show in our collaborative efforts in caring for our patients.

I look forward to working with my colleagues to serve you and your family members when you need anesthesia care for surgery. Our time together may be brief, but I never underestimate its significance to you and your family's well-being. I thank you in advance for placing your confidence in our ability to deliver to you the best quality and safest anesthetic care available.

Our goal at Kaiser Permanente is to be your health plan of choice and deliver the quality medical care our members deserve. Thank you again for choosing Kaiser Permanente.
