My Biography

Medical School: Rush Medical College at Rush University, Chicago, IL
Internship/Residency/Fellowship: Medical College of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA
Joined Kaiser Permanente Medical Group: 1994
Board Certification: Emergency Medicine, American Board of Emergency Medicine

I have been practicing medicine since finishing medical school, at Rush Medical College, Chicago Illinois, in 1985. I completed my residency in Emergency Medicine at The Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, followed by a one year fellowship in Emergency Medial Services (EMS). What attracted me to Emergency Medicine was the excitement of finding solutions to medical problems with a minimum of information—sort of how a detective begins to solve a crime with limited information.

After my fellowship, I moved back to the Chicago area and worked at Illinois Masonic Medical Center. Although, I enjoyed dealing with the immediate life threatening challenges of a more “inter-city” trauma center and teaching in a residency program, I find working with Kaiser patients very rewarding.

One of my administrative roles for Kaiser is as the representative to Emergency Medical Services in the county of San Mateo. I enjoy meeting and working with physicians, nurses, paramedics and other county personnel who share an interest in maintaining and improving the quality of EMS in the county.

Another administrative role I have at Kaiser is as the Emergency Department Peer Representative to Quality Improvement Committee. I participate in Kaiser’s continuing drive to deliver quality health care to our members. One of the benefits is the opportunity to learn from and educate my colleagues on current medical advances and best practices based on evidence based medicine.

Outside of my life at Kaiser, as a mother of two teenage children, a wife and responsible for a menagerie of pets, including a dog, three cats, a guinea pig and a beta fish (although my daughter still wants to add to the clan with a horse!). Like most mothers, I spend a good deal of my free time assisting and schlepping my kids to their various activities. My experiences as a mother have only improved my understanding and abilities as a doctor in caring for my youngest patients and their parents.

Our Department

The Emergency Department provides medical care to all patients in need of immediate attention. Our skilled and caring team includes physicians, registered nurses and technicians, all with special training in emergency medicine.

What to Expect

A registered nurse will assess your medical needs and assign you to a treatment team as quickly as possible. Top priority is given to individuals with life-threatening conditions, and those who arrive by ambulance. Patients with less serious conditions are seen as soon as possible. To avoid long waiting times, non-emergency problems are better served in the Minor Injury Clinic, Adult Medicine, Ob/Gyn, Pediatrics, or appropriate specialty departments. Call 650-742-2100 to schedule an appointment.

Co-payment for services is expected at the time of treatment. The level of your co-payment is determined by the health plan. The emergency department does not determine how much co-payment you will pay, although we are obligated to ask for it. We strive to deliver the same excellent care and service to all of our patients regardless of the level of their co-payment or their ability to pay.

Our goal is provide quality care to all patients in the Emergency Department. Thank you for choosing Kaiser Permanente.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
