Welcome to my homepage

Welcome to the Speech Pathology Department at Kaiser San Jose Medical Center, and thank you for visiting me today. Many people ask, “What does a speech-language pathologist do?” I think that is an excellent question. Our services go beyond helping someone to produce speech sounds or clear speech. We look at communication, as a whole, and all of its components. I provide comprehensive evaluation and therapy for individuals with difficulty expressing ideas, understanding what others say, reading, writing, reasoning, and remembering things after an injury to the brain such as a stroke or brain injury. People may have difficulty swallowing for various reasons, and I would help identify the problem and provide solutions to help that individual continue getting nutrition with the fewest restrictions and greatest quality of life. I also work closely with my physician colleagues in Head and Neck Surgery to help patients who have changes in the voice due to medical conditions. It is a very fulfilling career! I look forward to working with you to help you meet your individual goals.

My Background

Speech Pathology is a second career which I came upon somewhat serendipitously. I used to work for IBM as a computer analyst, but it did not take me long to realize I longed to work in a people oriented rather than computer oriented field. As I researched potential careers, and considered the medical field, I was drawn to the field of communication rehabilitation. In 1999, I completed my master’s degree at the College of Saint Rose in Albany, NY. After completing my clinical fellowship year at Sunnyview Hospital, an acute rehabilitation hospital for individuals with stroke and brain injury, I relocated to sunny California and have been living and working here ever since. I joined Kaiser Permanente in 2004 when I was asked to develop the speech pathology program at the San Jose location.

My Recommendations

The key to a healthy life and disease prevention is through a healthy lifestyle including exercise, diet, education, emotional support, and regular preventative check-ups with your physician.

An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
