Thank you for visiting my Kaiser Permanente webpage!
I am a board-certified psychiatrist with subspecialty training in addiction psychiatry. My practice is therefore a combination of general psychiatry and treatment of addictions. I have a holistic perspective in my practice of psychiatry – I believe that excellent mental health treatment necessarily involves many different components. As a psychiatrist, I see my role as two-fold. Firstly, I will maintain an ongoing dialogue with you regarding the big picture of your treatment and recovery, including your involvement in psychotherapy (individual, group, and/or family), self-help groups in the community, and the status of your general medical health. Secondly, I will be responsible for helping you manage any medications you may be taking for mental health reasons.
When it comes to addictions, I also have a broad perspective. I try to have a collaborative style with my patients and other members of the treatment team. In other words, I try to come to an agreement with my patients and colleagues about what is the best course of action rather than saying there is only one way. I believe that especially in the treatment of addictions, multiple modalities of treatment are necessary, including the use of medications, psychotherapy, community self-help support groups, and spiritual growth. I believe that in order to recover from addictions, one must learn to enjoy life in a fuller, subtler way. Recovery from addictions should not mean boot-camp; rather, it should bring liberation and a deeper sense of joy.
I was drawn to the field of psychiatry because of its overlap with our common pursuit of meaning in life. Within medicine as a whole, I believe that psychiatrists are privileged to be often sought by other physicians for complex ethical decisions, conflict resolution, story-telling, making meaning out of events, and, again, a holistic perspective. While I do much less in the way of physical contact with my patients, I believe in the power of words to change thought, emotion, and behavior. I have been further drawn into the practice of addictions because I believe that nowhere else in medicine are the stories and recoveries richer.
I am a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, and the American Board of Addiction Medicine. My hobbies include playing tennis, cooking, watching movies, playing board games, and enjoying conversation and company with family and friends.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
