About Me

The first time I heard about this “new profession” called genetic counseling, I was in my 10th grade biology class. I really liked the idea of genetic counseling but wasn’t quite sold on the idea that this was the direction I should take. I entered the University of Wisconsin-Madison with biology as my major; which changed to advertising, to dance, to journalism, to business all within the first year. Then a close family friend was diagnosed with a genetic disorder. I immediately bombarded my mother with genetic information and questions about how this would affect his family. She asked me why I was a business major and that’s when it clicked that I knew I wanted to spend my time as a genetic counselor.

I ended up with a Bachelor’s degree in biology after all and returned to the University of Wisconsin to earn my Master’s of Science degree in Medical Genetics. I spent one year in Seattle at Seattle Children’s providing genetic counseling for pediatric patients and their families. My responsibilities also included coordinating and providing genetic counseling for the State of Alaska Genetics and Birth Defects Clinics.

One of the reasons I joined Kaiser Permanente is its model of care delivery to members. It is exciting to be a part of a process that really works for patients, clinicians, and everyone supporting health care. I am also drawn to Kaiser’s commitment to education and am eager to be involved in the teaching process. One of my personal interests is ethno-medicine, or how culture influences medical decision making, and I am happy that Kaiser provides an environment where sharing different experiences is welcomed.

As a transplant from Minnesota, I have traded 10,000 lakes for one big ocean and a few bays; which is good, because I enjoy spending time in and around the water as well as baking, knitting, reading, and dancing.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
