My Biography

I am a native of Sacramento, born and raised in the Oak Park/Hollywood Park area, and a graduate of C.K. McClatchy HS in 1971. I obtained my BA degree in physics from UCLA in 1975 and attended medical school in Michigan. Afterwards, I returned to Los Angeles to complete my pediatric internship and residency training from 1979 to 1982.

I moved back to Sacramento to join the Kaiser Permanente pediatric staff at Morse Avenue in 1982. I transferred to my current Roseville Sierra Gardens office in 1985.

My Introduction to Pediatrics

As a third year medical student in 1978, I spent my first pediatric rotation at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. There, I observed what a wonderful skill it was to take care of infants and children. I admired the thoughtful ways of the teaching staff, not just in their relationship and manner toward their patients and families, but also amongst each other. These engaging experiences provided much support throughout my early pediatric training days, and they continue to be an endearing part of my pediatric community here at Kaiser Permanente.

My Practice

I am in my office at the Roseville Sierra Gardens clinic on most days of the week. However, I do work about 15 percent of my time in the special care nursery at Morse Avenue, helping there mostly at night and on weekends. On those occasions, I may be unavailable for urgent appointments for 2-3 day stretches.

If your child's appointment can wait, please try to schedule a day when I am in the office. If your child needs to be seen right away, one of my associates will be able to see you. Ask for either Drs. Robert Whitson, Scott Johnson, or Pat Sullivan, or Linda McHugh, RN. They are my neighbors in the clinic. They will keep me informed about especially ill patients of mine that they have seen during my absence.

Teaching Others

I, along with many of my colleagues in our clinic, have long been preceptors for 3rd year medical students from the UC Davis School of Medicine. There may be visits when you and your child will encounter a medical student who is trying to learn new and valuable skills. Please let me know right away if you feel uncomfortable when I do have a student with me. Thank you for your patience.

An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
