My Biography

As a medical student I had an experience while doing a rotation in anesthesiology that I will always remember. I observed an anesthesiologist in training providing care to a chemotherapy patient who needed a minor surgical procedure. The patient required only sedation and a local anesthetic to help him through what would otherwise have been a very painful experience. During the procedure the patient told me how relaxed, comfortable and even happy he felt. This struck me as a fine career; to provide comfort and safety to people when they are most in need.

I did much of my training in Southern California, finishing up with a fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology. In addition to common surgical procedures I gave anesthesia for complex and high risk procedures such as repair of congenital heart defects and liver transplants in both children and adults. After that I worked for three years with the U.S. Navy providing anesthesia care to Navy and Marine personnel. After serving my obligation I wanted to return to the Bay Area, where I grew up.

Since I entered the field of anesthesiology I have seen surgical anesthesia make enormous strides. We have adopted improved monitors to track our patient’s vital functions. We have medicines that are safer, and that help our patients to recover more quickly from anesthesia. We are implementing techniques to ensure that every step is taken to provide great care to our patients. One of my particular interests for the last 15 years has been to use computers to improve patient care.

Working at Kaiser Permanente has been a happy choice for me. Each of our operating rooms is equipped with top quality monitors and equipment that help us to provide state of the art care. We have an excellent team of anesthetists here at South San Francisco. Together, we discuss patient care and are always looking for ways to improve the safety and comfort of our patients.

I hope you will take advantage of our website to answer questions you may have about anesthesiology and your care options with us. If you are having surgery you will have an opportunity to meet with one of us personally to answer any additional questions that you may have.

Our goal at Kaiser Permanente is to be your health plan of choice and deliver the quality medical care our members deserve. Thank you again for choosing Kaiser Permanente.
