My Specialty and Why I Chose It

In my third year of college at UC Davis, where I was studying political science, I came across a pamphlet on Physical Therapy in the careers section of Shields Library. In it I read about rehabilitation of individuals with disabilities and at that moment thought that it might be rewarding. I did some volunteer work at the Veteran’s Home in Yountville and at Easter Seals in Sacramento and started taking science prerequisites. I was accepted to the Physical Therapy program at Loma Linda University in 1976 and graduated with a BS in Physical Therapy in 1978. I met my wife Winona there. She is a physical therapist and was a year ahead of me. In 1980 I was awarded the Master of Science in Anatomy from UC Davis with my research covering Systemic Sclerosis and the study of age related changes to tissues in the human body.

My Practice Philosophy

The Physical Therapy motto from Loma Linda is “To make man whole.” I have carried that philosophy with me in my practice. Helping individuals regain the self esteem of caring for themselves and promoting independence in function and compassion and concern for the individual who is in pain or who has a disability is the necessary ingredient to fulfilling the mission to “make man whole.” What many physical therapists knew from practice now is termed Evidenced Based Physical Therapy. For example, tendonitis in the body has much better treatment results being treated acutely rather than in a chronic state and the stroke patients not only have better rehabilitation and quality of life outcomes when treated soon after their stroke in out-patient and in-patient rehab settings but also that life expectancy is extended. Department wide knowledge of evidence based physical therapy can only help in our practice.

My Credentials

Bachelor of Science, Physical Therapy Loma Linda University 1978
Master of Science, Anatomy University of California, Davis 1980

My Tenure with Kaiser Permanente

I have been a physical therapist for Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and Kaiser Permanente for 25+ years.

Why I Like Practicing Medicine at Kaiser Permanente

I like the independence in practice and peer contact. I like the ease at which I can communicate with patients’ referring practitioners. Annual continuing education and long term course offerings have benefited my practice. It is not only a great place to work but also a place of good people and great medicine for which I have had the good fortune to be on the receiving end.

Professional Interests & Affiliations

I am interested in stroke rehabilitation, neuro rehabilitation, bracing, strategies for improving active range of motion and decreasing pain in the arthritic neck, restoring functional range and decreasing pain in frozen shoulder and the use of exercise to decrease pain and increase function in chronic and acute low back pain.

On a Personal Note

I have a wonderful wife, Winona, of almost 30 years who is my best friend, three fine grown sons, a great daughter in law, and last of all two border collies and my son’s cat. I enjoy photography, visiting the California coast and reading historical fiction and non-fiction. I enjoy teaching and have recently taught in the School of Allied Health at Sacramento City College. Someday I would like to travel outside the US. I have a passport with no stamps and would like to remedy that.
