About Me
I consider myself a Bay Area native although I was born in Korea, lived in LA, Washington DC, Ohio, and Michigan. I knew the first year while here attending UC Berkeley that this was going to be my home. I consider myself lucky because I have lived in so many different places have made many wonderful friends, but was always able to keep my roots in the Bay area. Even as early as 6th grade, I knew I wanted to be a physician. (I did consider a career of art in the ripe old age of 12, but decided pragmatically that science and medicine were more stimulating and helpful.) My first experiences in the emergency rooms of SF General as a volunteer were very exciting and challenging, and I knew that medicine was for me.
While in medical school, I found that I had a knack for anatomy. I think this 'knack' for anatomy, as well as my natural affinity to art, led me to radiology. Radiology is alot like art: although sometimes you wonder what you are looking at, eventually the picture makes itself known to you. I consider many diseases and symptoms like a puzzle. One of the things I like the most about my job is helping other physicians solve the mysteries we see everyday in our offices.
During my residency, I had the opportunity to rotate through a Kaiser Permanente facility. I liked the collegial atomosphere I found at Kaiser and the freedom we physicians had to concentrate on the important aspects of medicine and can leave the paperwork to someone else. I also think that the fee-for-service atmosphere may create more studies than necessary at many other hospitals.
