Why I Chose to Practice Medicine at Kaiser Permanente

I joined Kaiser Permanente in 1993. I chose Kaiser Permanente because of the freedom to practice anesthesia without concern about the patient's financial coverage. This was important to me because I saw some physicians looking at patient's medical coverage as a part of deciding factor in which patient to take during my residency training and I felt this was not the kind of medicine I wanted to practice. Furthermore, my decision to proceed with anesthesia on a particular patient is not affected by whether a particular surgeon will continue to seek my services in the future if I delay the surgery for what I believe the patient needs prior to the anesthetic. In addition, I am salaried physician and thus, I have no interest in counting how many patients to bill or selecting the cases that I feel provide the best financial advantage.

My Healthcare Practice

In my group practice, I openly consult with colleagues in many different specialties without worrying about potential financial burden to my patients. This frees me to make honest medical decisions. Practice of anesthesia appeals to me for the challenges and rewards of safely navigating a patient through a surgical procedure. What is means is that while the surgeon is operating, I am in charge of the patient's overall well-being. I monitor the patient's blood pressure, electrocardiogram, and oxygen saturation level to make sure patient will pass through the procedure without problem. Furthermore, I do my best to keep the patient pain free and minimize nausea or vomiting in the post-surgical recovery room area.

I enjoy my practice at Kaiser Permanente because I am allowed to practice anesthesia the way I intended to without worrying about the business side of the practice and plenty of assistance from my colleagues if I need it.
