My Practice Philosophy

My goal is to provide each patient with the kind of care and compassion that I would want my family members to receive. Since all of my extended family receives their care here, I have a vested interest in ensuring that each and every one of our patients can depend on that kind of care.

About Me

I was born in Calgary, Alberta, the fourth of five children. Since the age of three, I have lived in California – and like most “natives” would find it difficult to live anywhere else. I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology (with Highest Honors) from the University of California at Santa Cruz and my medical degree from the University at Irvine School of Medicine, graduating in 1985. I then began my residency in Internal Medicine at the Kaiser Foundation Hospital in Santa Clara, as my goal was to practice in the Kaiser Permanents system, which I saw as the future of health care in America.

After completing my residency, I joined the Kaiser Permanente Staff of Physicians at Santa Clara (1988) and initially practiced primary care Internal Medicine, gathering a wonderful practice of patients who brought me much joy and satisfaction. As medicine became more complicated and the needs of hospitalized patients more demanding, I worked with others to implement the current practice of Hospital Medicine within Kaiser Permanente, as well as outside of our system as a founding board member of the Society of Hospital Medicine. Since 1996, my practice, as well as that of a growing group of physicians across the county, has focused on the challenge of providing care to patients whose illnesses are severe enough to require hospitalization. I work in the Emergency Department to facilitate the admission and care plan for adult patients, care for them in shifts that span 24 hours a day while in the hospital, and shepherd them back to their primary care physician at the time of discharge from the hospital. I am board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

My interests

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my husband, tending to our garden, and making jewelry.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
