About Me and My Practice Philosophy
Hello and thank you for visiting my home page! My name is Edward Dayoan, and I am one of the physicians specializing in Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine here in Walnut Creek.
First of all, I deeply believe that patients need to be comfortable with their medical care – not only with the management plan, but also with all the people involved in their care (including laboratory technicians, medical assistants, nurses, primary physicians, and the specialist). This web page is a starting point for gathering some basic information about me as well as the disorders that I might help you manage.
I was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii where I spent my fair share of days on the beach. During my childhood, I thought of entering every profession from law enforcement, to teaching, to playing basketball (alas, I’m too short), to engineering, to music (I studied classical piano for 17 years). My eyes were open to just about any profession. It was not until college, however, that I decided to pursue a medical career – one that could offer me a wealth of knowledge, a lifetime of continued learning, and the ability to contribute to the community.
In 1990, I graduated from the University of Hawaii’s School of Medicine, married my wonderful wife, and moved to Santa Clara, California, where I completed my residency in internal medicine. As Chief Resident, I spent another year teaching in Santa Clara before moving to Pasadena, California, to pursue subspecialty training in pulmonary diseases and critical care medicine at the University of Southern California. I chose these two fields because of my interest in helping people with lung disorders and people who were severely ill. Also, the intensive care setting offered many challenges that required quick thinking and immediate action – exactly the kind of environment in which I thrive.
My fellowship exposed me to more pulmonary and critical care disorders than I believe I will ever see in my lifetime. The experiences I gained during my training in Southern California prepared me to manage people with the most common pulmonary ailments to patients with the most serious problems encountered in the Intensive Care Unit.
I joined a private practice in the San Gabriel Valley. I usually saw patients as a pulmonary or critical care consultant. But, because I still enjoyed the special interactions I had as an internist with my patients, I continued to be the primary care physician for many of my patients.
Shortly after my daughter’s first birthday, and with another child on the way, I moved my family back to the San Francisco Bay Area. I explored many opportunities presented to me, but realized that Kaiser Permanente's uniquely integrated system was the best way to deliver health care today.
I joined Kaiser Permanente’s Pulmonary and Critical Care department in 1999 and have enjoyed working in Walnut Creek ever since. I have the pleasure of working with a group of very knowledgeable physicians who have similar goals for the organization and the way care is managed. I have been able to use my specialty training to help patients manage their diseases. And now I have luxury of being able to balance my career with my family life. I have also found some time for sports and for developing some of my more creative endeavors such as music, photography, and videography.
I hope this web site has at least some of the information you seek. But mostly, I hope your time with me, my colleagues, and all our health care system is and will continue to be a wonderful experience.
