My Story

My first year of medical school, I had the misfortune of fracturing my ankle sliding into home plate during an intramural softball game. Though the run counted, that experience began a chain of events which lead me to my current profession and career at Kaiser Permanente.

While limping around in my cast I began investigating the biology of bone healing. This process, the precise coordination between bone forming cells fascinated me beyond any other medical topic I had yet encountered.

My later experience on the Orthopaedic Surgery service confirmed that the field held particular features which I felt would offer a lifetime’s worth of interest and satisfaction. Orthopaedics involves both the medical and surgical treatment of musculoskeletal conditions in a wide variety of anatomic areas of the body. We treat conditions involving the hands, arms, shoulders, hips, knees, ankles, feet and all areas in between. Orthopaedists treat conditions with medications, physical therapy, injections, bracing, orthotics, casts, as well as surgery for those patients whom these measures are not effective or appropriate.

This breadth appealed to me greatly.

Though I treat patients of all ages, I hold a very special interest in the treatment of children. Having children myself has greatly enhanced my interest in the field and I believe allows me to relate and empathize with both the child and their parents. An orthopaedic condition, whether new in onset (broken arm) or long term (intoeing) can be a serious source of concern for these families despite the typically benign nature of the condition. Spending time listening to the child and parents, addressing their fears and concerns and outlining a thorough plan of action is critical to providing care and reassurance to these patients.

Prior to my arrival at Kaiser Permanente, I was in private practice in Washington State. This was a valuable experience allowing me to hone and develop my practice patterns. The sun, my extended family, and an excellent opportunity at Kaiser Permanente brought me back to California in May 2003.

My position at Kaiser Permanente allows me to focus on the aspect of medicine which I enjoy most—the patients. I maintain close contact with my colleagues at UCDMC and Shriner’s Hospital to keep current on Orthopaedic topics. The quality of my partner Orthopedic Surgeons and the excellence in specialty and primary care has truly been impressive to me, even compared to my prior experience in private practice. The Medical Group has made available all the necessary technology, resources, and practitioners to assure an exceptionally high level of care. I would feel completely comfortable having my own family member cared for at our facility and specifically by our Orthopaedic department.

I look forward to providing Orthopaedic care to the Kaiser Permanente North Valley community and to a long, rewarding career at Kaiser Permanente.
