My background…

I have been administering anesthetics at Kaiser Permanente San Jose since 1979. I began as a private practice anesthesiologist. I saw many health plans come and go. My practice at times was constrained by insurance administrators who appeared more focused on finances than patient care. The Kaiser Health Plan remained strong and efficient. I closed my private practice and joined the Kaiser Permanente Medical Group. I was then free to care for my patients without external oversight. I could order the necessary laboratory tests and provide the highest quality of anesthesia and medical care without monetary concerns to the patient or having to obtain approval from an insurance company. As a Kaiser physician, I find a comradeship with my fellow physicians that did not exist in private practice. All the medical specialties are now under one roof. Consultants are just down the hallway instead of across town and are readily available. I have been the Hospital Chief of the Department of Anesthesiology at Kaiser Permanente San Jose since 1982. I am also Chairman and Chief Consultant of the hospital’s Conscious Sedation Services for minor procedures performed outside of the main operating rooms. I am listed in the Bay Area Consumers’ CHECKBOOK as a Bay Area Top Doctor. I am also listed by the Consumers’ Research Council of America as one of America’s Top Physicians.

Clinical interests…

Regional anesthesia. I like to focus my anesthesia on the body area undergoing surgery. Patients can still sleep during the surgery, but they wake up with better pain control.

On a personal note…

Outside of the operating room, I have a passion for competitive sports. I have completed 86 marathons, 142 half marathons, 38 triathlons, 9 swims from Alcatraz Island to San Francisco, 55 bike rides of 62.5 miles or more, and over 600 other competition events and tournaments involving running, biking, swimming, softball, bowling, and volleyball.

My philosophy of care...

My goal is to provide to you the highest quality of anesthesia and medical care with a personal touch to accommodate your special needs and concerns.

Contact information…

I am available by telephone through the Kaiser Permanente San Jose operator at (408) 972-7000. If you have any questions or concerns about anesthesia, please call me. Chances are that I will be here to talk to you directly. In over 32 years at Kaiser Permanente San Jose, I have never missed a day of work.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
