How to Use My Home Page...

My Biography

Kaiser offers me a wonderful opportunity to impact my patient’s lives and work closely with talented physicians who are committed to providing the utmost in care to San Francisco’s unique and diverse patient population. Kaiser’s comprehensive care model allows me to focus fully on the patient rather than on front-office or insurance concerns.

Patients with addictions suffer from multiple medical, psychological, and social problems associated with drug use. Addiction treatment cannot be successful unless it addresses the whole person. Kaiser’s integrated care environment is an ideal for the management of complex conditions like addictions and chronic pain. Kaiser offers advantages not found in other medical system or HMO.

I am fortunate that Kaiser supports my attendance at important medical conferences through the California Society of Addiction Medicine and the American Psychiatric Association. On my own, I read broadly about addictions, psychiatry, and the overlap of co-occurring mental and physical disorders. I not only have a strong interest in the medical and psychological consequences of drug addiction, but also the impact of drug addiction on our communities. In my role as a commissioner on California’s Mental Health Services Oversight and Accountability commission, I’m able to share my experience to improve mental health and drug addiction treatment in our state.

Recently, I signed up for Kaiser’s Health Coach program through our own Health Education department. I’ve accepted my doctors’ advice to exercise (ugh!). I now run three times per week—and it’s working!

Outside of work, I enjoy outdoor activities such as backpacking, canoeing, and fly fishing. I play piano, sing in a choir, and occasionally participate in a Zen meditation retreat. I live here in the city with my wife and three children. We are active in scouting, sports and our Buddhist temple.

Disclaimer
If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
