Welcome to my home page and to the Chemical Dependency Services at Kaiser Permanente San Jose Medical Center. I hope you will find useful information here about me, and my practice philosophy, as well as some useful links on the left hand side of this page to resources on Mental Health Information and Web Sites and general health topics.

About Me

I grew up in New Jersey. I practiced Medicine and Rheumatology in North Carolina for 10 years then moved to California and joined Kaiser, Santa Teresa in October of 1989. In recent years, born out of a desire to help those with alcohol and drug problems, I have received additional training and now limit my practice to Addiction Medicine and Substance Abuse Disorders. My primary areas of interest are focused on patient and family education, developing close ties with the community and promoting healing using as wide a variety of methods as possible, including: traditional Western Medicine, complementary and alternative medical practices (especially meditation) and spirituality. My personal interests include my wonderful family (my wife Lee and three great children Laurel 14, Porter 15 and JoAnna 25), music (playing & arranging, mostly keyboard instruments), the outdoors (hiking & whitewater rafting) & studying the relationship of the mind, spirituality & health.

My Philosophy of Care

I encourage my patients to learn as much as possible about their illness and treatment options, to be open-minded about their inner-healing potential and to participate in an overall healthy life-style.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
