My Biography

I am a San Francisco native, and I am happy to consider both Kailua, Oahu and San Francisco as my home. San Francisco is a city of magnificent culinary, and unmatched cultural diversity. The Bay Area offers tremendous artistic culture as well. I am happy to have transferred from Honolulu Kaiser Permanente to the San Francisco Medical Center at an important time for my mainland family. Kaiser Permanente has great systems in place to ensure that patients can partner with their health care team. Our health care model focuses on health maintenance. Health Connect, our electronic medical charting system, is a superb tool and represents a significant investment in, and commitment to, our members. Clinicians are able to review a patient’s history at a glance, and can build on what other members on the care team are doing. At the same time, patients can view much of their medical record through KP.org. This level of integration remains unsurpassed in health care.

The field of Nephrology has intrigued me for over 29 years. Many aspects of it, such as dialysis and transplantation are really still in their infancy, and I have seen many wonderful advances in therapy. My background includes experience in dialysis, pancreas and kidney transplantation, management, and as a Kaiser Renal Care Manager. So I present a breadth and depth of knowledge across a spectrum of nephrology concerns.

I am deeply invested in the early identification of persons who are at risk for developing kidney disease so that we can have earlier starts in disease management, with appropriate intervention and health maintenance strategies. Another of my primary interests is diabetes, as diabetics are often at risk for developing kidney disease. I want to assist patients in appreciating the connections between the two so that that they can avoid serious, life-altering repercussions down the road. Early, proactive intervention and supportive, empathetic care is of paramount importance. Much of my volunteer work at the National Kidney Foundation of Hawaii, and now at the San Francisco chapter, supports this mission by helping to screen members of our communities for kidney disease risk, and then providing education to lower that risk through education and adoption of healthier eating habits and lifestyles.

Through my membership and volunteer work with the American Nephrology Nurses’ Association (ANNA) I support efforts to bring educational opportunities to nurses and technicians working with patients with kidney disease. At ANNA, I mentor new nurses and dialysis technicians, assisting them with securing their national certification. At Hawai’i Pacific University, I enjoyed the opportunity to teach first-year nursing students.

Outside of work, I enjoy attending cultural performances, listening to all kinds of music, reading, studying, and discovering new restaurants with friends. I am an avid Sudoku fanatic. I THRIVE through a program of regular exercise, walking, and diet. When I say “diet,” I refer to a plan of sensibly managing meals through portion control and frequency, not a destructive system of deprivation. As an adult-onset diabetic myself, I share many of the same challenges my patients are confronting while trying control risk factors for long-term disease complications.

My wonderful husband is a one-man outrigger ocean kayaker who is on the water almost daily and is an inspiration to me as an example of a healthy senior citizen who is thriving. We have a daughter in college and a son on active duty in the Coast Guard stationed at Port Angeles, WA. I look forward to welcoming you and working in partnership with you at San Francisco Medical Center.
