Welcome to my personal web page, sorry you needed to come. As was once said, it is not usually a good thing when you look up to see the face of your friendly neighborhood emergency doc hovering over you. This is my chance to give you some of my PERSONAL views on the Emergency Medicine process and maybe reduce some of the inherently uncomfortable aspects. One thing I think it is very important for people to understand- "emergency care" does not necessarily mean fast care. Emergency care refers more to the level of medical training and expertise of the staff in the delivery highly specialized resuscitation to patients at risk for dying. Pain relief is a huge priority too and helping you with what brought you to the Emergency Department is important and our goal is to do all these things as successfully as possible.
Why Emergency Medicine?
I have a knack for getting in touch with most people pretty quickly, I have an interest in the things medical, I can't sit still for too long and I hate pain. I hate wearing a tie and I like the 'best practice' concept. Roll all this together and you get Emergency Medicine in a Kaiser environment. 17 years and counting.
The Emergency Department is a stressfull environment for all of us. I want to do whatever I can to make this experience as comfortable and as expeditious as possible for both patients and their families consistent with the requirements of good medical practice.
My Medical Philosophy
If you are in pain, I am going to take care of it. If you have new problem that can't wait for your primary doctor (and you should have one, I do), I'll do what I can to get the problem taken care of and I will give you my honest impression of what's wrong (no latin gobbledygoop (sp?). I follow the latest medical science regarding the most common things we do and adapt my practice to these changes- therefore I am not a big prescriber of antibiotics (wash out your wounds right away...do it now!)and prefer good cleaning, wound care and pain meds where appropriate.
I hate the fact that there are long waits in the Emergency Department. Many factors are involved- extended lunch breaks are not one of them. Ask for the things you need when you get here, especially pain medicine and if it's OK, we will try to get it to you even before I see you.
My Personal History
I have been at Kaiser all my life... I was born here (Sunset Hospital, Hollywood, 1956). I chose medicine in high school, and emergency medicine before it became a specialty when I was in college at U.C.Irvine. I studied Science at Edinburgh University in Scotland for a year, I attended UCSF for med school, did internship at Highland Hospital in Oakland and Emergency Medicine residency at University Hospital at Cincinnati. I completed residency in Decemeber 1986. My wife Ellen and I choose Sacramento for family reasons and after due consideration of my local employment options, I joined The Permanente Medical Group in 1987. I do not have any regrets on this choice.
My Outside Interests
I am cutting down on my outside interests to devote more time to the emergency department. I volunteer as a 'SWAT medic' with the Sac County Sheriff's department; I am a level III reserve deputy sheriff. I enjoy time with my family, movies and tennis. We moved to the area 17 years ago and to Roseville/Granite Bay about 6 years ago. There is another Dan Field, MD in town and we are not related (he has curly hair and more of it).
