Welcome to my home page!

I am a physician in the Continuing Care Department of Kaiser’s San Jose Medical Center. I provide medical care for patients who are homebound or in convalescent hospitals. Most of my patients have serious debilitating chronic illnesses. My job is to aid them in getting more satisfaction out of life.

About me…

I am board certified in Internal Medicine, having graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine and completing an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic. Prior to transferring to the Continuing Care Department I worked as a Hospitalist as well as in the Medicine Clinic. I enjoy Internal Medicine because I have found it spiritually fulfilling by allowing me to connect with people on an intimate level. Currently my main area of clinical interest is in the geriatric population. Most of my patients are living in long term care centers or going through a period of rehabilitation after an acute illness. I believe in a philosophy of care that emphasizes quality of life and recognizes individuality and dignity. Therefore, I try to gain an appreciation for each of my patient’s personal goals and philosophy for living, and tailor their care based on these.

I’m sure that many patients don’t realize that working with them is often also therapeutic for me. I find comfort in knowing that people can find joy in the face of diseases. I have watched family members lovingly and selflessly care for their elderly relatives and admire their spirit. I carry this lesson with me in my personal life.

I enjoy being partners with patients, families, nurses, social workers, therapists and everybody involved in the delivery of care. This teamwork is very rewarding, and yields much better results for the patients and their families.

Outside of patient care, I’m an outdoor enthusiast. I enjoy spending time in the wilderness backpacking, or just taking very long hikes in our local parks.

My recommendations…

I encourage my patients to take an active part in their own care and decision making whenever possible. To this end I believe that everyone should have completed a ‘Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care Decisions” document and should have sent a copy to our medical records department. They should also try and communicate as much as possible to their families and doctors about their wishes and goals.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
