About Me

I've been a physician with Kaiser Permanente since 1988. My father is a physician too, so I guess it's in my blood. It has always seemed natural to me to work with people who need help understanding their illness. The satisfaction of helping in this way can be thrilling. My wife is a musician and a piano teacher. She loves her students just as she loves teaching them piano. I think that I get a reward from my work as a doctor that is similar to what a teacher might get from an eager audience. The etymology of the word doctor comes from the Medieval Latin word for teacher. To me, that's not an accident.

As a hospitalist I am able to see our members when they need me the most. It is also often the time they are most open to looking at things in new ways, to taking new directions. These times of transition are frequently painful, but surprisingly often they are still hopeful, positive experiences for everyone involved. Being with a member and their loved ones as fear is transformed into understanding and then resolve is, more than anything else, what keeps me whistling while I come to work in the morning.

I hope you never have to meet me professionally, because that's likely to be in the emergency room after the emergency room physician has decided you're too sick to go home. I'd rather meet you out on the bike trail or at the swimming pool. But if you need me I'll be eager to help and I hope I can do a good job for you.

Stay well, and eat your apples.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
