Thank you for visiting my home page!
I look forward to meeting you on the day of surgery. Being nervous before surgery is normal. It's part of my job as an anesthesiologist to make sure that you are comfortable and safe throughout your surgery. I chose anesthesiology as my specialty because of the diversity of the patients we see, from healthy children to older adults with multiple medical problems, and because of the interesting and complex human physiology that we witness in the operating room.
When asked what I do, many people think that I give a shot of "anesthesia" then walk away. The true story is something much more complicated. I usually describe anesthesiology as more like taking control of a very complicated machine, with dozens of controls. When you are asleep under anesthesia, organs like your heart, lungs, and even kidneys do not function the way they do when you are awake. Add to this the additional factor of having surgery, and the stress to your body from those changes. This is why your anesthesiologist is an important part of a successful peri-operative care team. I'll do my best to make this the best and safest possible experience for you.
I came to Kaiser in 2008. What appealed to me most about working at Kaiser is the camaraderie amongst my coworkers, and the fact that we can truly practice in an environment where physicians are motivated by patients' well-being and not by costs and personal gain. This makes it easy for colleagues to share opinions and expertise for the benefit of our patients. I can focus on providing the best patient care without having to worry about the business end of things.
In addition to providing anesthesia in the operating room, I have additional training in Pain Management and am interested in regional anesthesia or nerve blocks for patients who may benefit from them.
I was born in Canada, and grew up on the East Coast before coming to San Francisco for medical school. I fell in love with the Bay Area and knew that I wanted to come back. After spending a few years in Boston, I'm happy to be back in the Bay Area and working at Kaiser. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family, hiking, cooking, exploring museums, and traveling.
