My Profession and Practice

I am a radiologist. While I might be invisible to most of you, I work closely with all of your primary care physicians and the specialists you might see here in Kaiser Permanente. The specialty of radiology covers all aspects of imaging and diagnosis from your basic chest x-ray to more specialized forms of imaging such as MRI, CT, Ultrasound and Angiography. While you will probably have more contact with our technologists that produce the studies that your doctor orders, you can be confident that we are there behind the scenes not only supervising the work that the technologists produce but also interpreting those same exams. I am also there to consult with your doctor and specialists to insure that the best imaging test is ordered to address their concerns and yours.

I chose to become a radiologist because it encompasses such a wide and varied field and is most frequently on the cutting edge of new technology. While we still rely on x-rays to produce many of the imaging studies we perform, more advanced imaging uses sound waves (ultrasound) and large magnets (MRI) to produce detailed images of different parts of the body. I underwent a year of subspecialty training in the field of MRI because it represents a fascinating and continually developing part of the field of radiology, although my practice still involves reading most of the imaging studies we produce.

My Tenure with Kaiser Permanente and Why I’m Still Here

I have been with Kaiser Permanente for over 6 years, after spending a year in academic medicine. I came to Kaiser Permanente initially because it offered me an opportunity to remain in this part of California as part of a large, stable group lead by physicians. I have stayed with Kaiser Permanente because of its philosophy of practicing medicine and caring for patients. Kaiser Permanente offers me the opportunity to practice my field of medicine with a primary focus on the patient. I am able to practice radiology in an integrated system free of much of the red tape that exists elsewhere and with the knowledge that there is a strong support system in place to handle most of the business concerns of a radiology practice. Kaiser Permanente has also dedicated a large amount of resources to insure that as a group we have the most up to date imaging equipment available and to insure that there is a strong information network in place. The ability to work with the newest technology and to work with a whole team of great physicians and staff has led me to discover that this is the best place for me to practice radiology.

My Personal History

I have been in the Sacramento area since 1991 and have settled here with my wife and two young children. Right now, our lives revolve mostly around our children and their activities, but we enjoy fine dining and catching a good movie when we can. I hope to resume traveling and working on my golf game in the near future.
