My Biography

I’ve had a great experience working at Kaiser Permanente in the Bay Area. I love San Francisco because of its close proximity to excellent skiing and other outdoor activities. It also fulfills my need to be close to the ocean. I came to Kaiser because the all-inclusive health care concept appealed to me. I think this is a great model for the provision of primary care. Patients can receive the follow-up care they need and, depending on the circumstances, I can often book their follow-up appointments the very next day. Medical records are electronic, so I am able, for example, to call up a patient’s medication list and old EKG for comparison with an emergency EKG. The ready availability of this type of information facilitates excellent patient care.

One of the aspects of the Emergency Department I most enjoy is my colleagues. They are wonderful people who are truly dedicated to personable, high-quality care. Our patient population is very diverse, and most members are fairly interested in health maintenance and prevention. It’s wonderful to have the opportunity to intervene and make a tangible difference in people’s lives. I particularly enjoy listening to the great stories of some of our older members.

I have special interests in disaster preparedness and disaster relief medicine. I was able to assist in New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, and I’ve just been accepted into the Doctors Without Borders organization for deployment to disaster sites around the world.

When away from the medical center, I enjoy trail running, skiing, bicycling, reading fiction and poetry (Hemingway and Wallace Stevens are among my favorites), attending the symphony and other cultural events, and spending time with friends. I THRIVE by working out, maintaining some quiet time each day, and watching what I eat. I also enjoy taking long walks with my dog, an Akita named Kobe!

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
