Welcome to my home page!

I have been a staff optometrist at Kaiser Permanente for over 15 years beginning at Kaiser Antioch in 1994 and transferring from Kaiser Hayward to San Rafael in 2005. I am pleased to practice within a group that provides the highest standard of medical care and continuously seeks to improve itself.

I attended the University of California at Berkeley and graduated with honors with a double major in psychology and sociology. While an undergraduate I took a course in physiological psychology with a distinguished vision researcher that inspired me. Later, another vision researcher encouraged me to explore optometry as a profession. At the UC Berkeley School of Optometry I developed my scientific interest, engaging in and publishing basic research in physiological optics, but in clinical practice I have found my calling in life. I consider it a privilege to care for others. I am delighted to practice in a setting that includes patients of all ages and I'm very happy to have a large geriatrics practice. I am deeply committed to providing the best possible care for each individual.

When I was a child my uncle was a studio guitarist and music television show host in the South. He encouraged my love of music so I learned to play guitar and now I'm studying with a local master jazz guitarist. My mother, a Native American of Cherokee and Crow descent, was a writer, poet and newspaper columnist who frequently wrote about Native American issues. She inspired my love of literature and learning. My father taught me the values of kindness, patience and perseverance. Trained as an aircraft mechanic he took a job as a bus driver after World War II when there was little demand for his profession. He worked tirelessly and unbegrudgingly all his life to care for his family. He also fostered my interest in antique aircraft and love of flying.

I served for several years as bulletin editor for the board of my local professional society. Since coming to Kaiser, I have been actively committed to our unique labor management partnership in which both parties cooperatively address all the issues of operating a large health care organization. I served for several years on the board of directors of the engineers and scientists union and was one of the negotiators for our contract. I have served within Kaiser on the local professional practice committee.

I am fluent in English and passable in Spanish.

I look forward to seeing you at your next eye exam.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
