About Me

I grew up in South Texas and graduated from college at the University of Texas at Austin. After completing medical school and residency in Dallas in 1986, I moved to Santa Cruz County, California. I practiced general Internal Medicine for four years before joining Kaiser and moving to Sacramento in 1990.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Certification by Examination: Addiction Medicine ASAM# 006678
  • MBA: University of California Irvine
  • MS: Medical Informatics, University of California Davis

My Healthcare Practice

My professional practice is a mixture of patient care, research and administration. I have a small Internal Medicine practice composed of loyal patients, many of whom I have known since my early days with Kaiser in 1990. I am the recipient of a five year (2000-2005) research training grant from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism of the National Institutes of Health. My primary research interest is using advanced computational methods to determine the costs and benefits of chemical dependency treatment in Kaiser's integrated health care delivery system.

I represent my speciality's contribution to the new electronic medical record project HEALTH CONNECT, which is coming shortly and will allow us to greatly enhance your care experience and ability to thrive. Additionally, I am the Medical Director of the Sacramento Chemical Dependency Recovery Program where I provide administrative and clinical oversight for the medical and psychological care rendered to approximately 3,000 patients each year. I encourage all of my patients to sign up and use our online resource KP.ORG.

My Outside Interests

My wife and I enjoy travelling and flea market shopping all around the world. My other hobbies are gardening, fishing, photography, and playing with our four cocker spaniels.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
