About Me

I have been a Pediatric Endocrinologist since 1985, when I first joined Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco, caring for children with issues of growth, puberty, hormone disorders, as well as diabetes. My undergraduate degree from Swarthmore College, near Philadelphia where I was born, was in psychology, with a special interest in child development. As a medical student at Cornell University Medical College in New York City, I became interested in the field of pediatric endocrinology after hearing a professor lecture about treating children with growth hormone deficiency. I loved the idea of helping children grow, almost like giving them “magic beans” and then seeing them “sprout”. I still really enjoy this aspect of my practice. Often, I can reassure children and parents that they are healthy and normal, just following their own path, whether in the “fast lane” or the “slow lane”.

Another important part of my practice has been caring for children with diabetes, and I have participated in the development of the diabetes care team model at Kaiser San Francisco in the late 1980s, as well as at Kaiser Walnut Creek in the 1990s. I moved to Children’s Hospital Oakland in 2000, as diabetes director, again working on development of a multi-disciplinary team approach for diabetes care. I have a special interest in the problems of pediatric obesity and type 2 diabetes in our youth, and have been involved in related clinical research at Kaiser Permanente and during my years at Children’s Oakland. Since returning to practice at Kaiser Oakland and Kaiser Hayward last year, I look forward to making further efforts along with my colleagues to better identify, treat, and prevent type 2 diabetes in childhood. I think Kaiser is the ideal health-care delivery system to address this epidemic, which is now impacting families across all ages. I was very close to my maternal grandfather, who had insulin-dependent type 2 diabetes. I know he would be proud that I am working toward this goal.

When not working in the East Bay, I enjoy spending time with my two grown sons who were both born at Kaiser San Francisco, and have grown up Thriving with Kaiser. I hope to help all of my patients and families do the same.

An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
