How to Use My Home Page...

My Biography

Welcome to my homepage! I am one of the four neonatologists at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in San Francisco that directs the care of sick newborn infants. We work as a team with specialized neonatal nurses, respiratory therapists, social workers, physical therapists, pharmacists and dieticians to provide the best care for the ill infants in the Intensive Care Nursery (ICN).

Advancements in neonatal care have markedly improved the survival and outcome of ill premature infants. As a result of these improvements, infants (and their parents) spend many days, weeks or even months in the ICN before they are discharged home. I believe that it is essential that the parents and neonatal team meet on a frequent basis to maintain clear communication and understanding about the infant. I have also completed training as a lactation educator and enjoy supporting mothers as they learn to feed their infants.

I was raised in Houston, Texas and moved to Massachusetts to obtain a B.A. in Biology from Brandeis University. After graduating from Medical School at The University of Texas in Galveston, I completed a Pediatrics residency and Neonatology fellowship at the University of California San Francisco. I joined Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in San Francisco in 1998. In 2000, I became the Director of Newborn Services and gained the responsibility of overseeing the ICN and Well Baby Nursery.

In addition to my responsibilities at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco, I am an Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at UCSF and spend two months a year as a Staff Neonatologist in the Intensive Care Nursery at UCSF. I am also the Medical Director of a Neonatal Database at the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in Oakland. I have completed research projects on Premature Infant Chronic Lung Disease and Apnea of Prematurity.

I enjoy my work caring for sick infants, communicating with their families and providing education to the pediatric residents and medical students. I was raised in a Spanish speaking household (by an Venezuelan mother and Cuban father) and speak good (but not fluent) Spanish. My hobbies include playing classical guitar, running, cooking (and eating) and spending time with my family. As the father of twin boys, I understand the challenges involved in multiple births.

Other Languages: Spanish
Undergraduate Education: BA in Biology, Brandeis University
Professional Affiliations: American Academy of Pediatrics; California Association of Neonatologist

Gracias, Carlos Botas

Why a Pediatrician

Why a pediatrician? Why do kids need a specialist? Because kids are different. And so are the doctors that choose to take care of kids.

Pediatrics is the medical specialty that is fully focused on kids: from birth through the exciting and tumultuous years of adolescence.

Pediatricians are trained for 4 years in medical school to become a doctor and then have three full years of extra training in how to take care of kids and teens. Some pediatricians have additional training in a subspecialty area like cardiology, pulmonology, or hematology. Our department has general pediatricians and specialist pediatricians to make sure that your children stay healthy and, if they get sick, that they get the best care possible.

Pediatricians believe that your children start healthy. We are trained to focus on prevention of problems and work with families for the betterment of children. We love children and, in truth, most of us are big kids ourselves.

In the pediatric department, we look forward to caring for your family as it grows.
