About Psychiatry

Psychiatry is a field of medicine that studies the complex interrelationships between emotions, thoughts and behaviors in people in health and in illness. Psychiatrists are physicians who are uniquely trained to recognize disorders of mood and thought, and to treat them medically. The numerous advances in the understanding of brain functioning have made psychiatry an exciting and rapidly evolving field. I have always had a keen interest in learning about human behavior and how it can be modified to help people live happier and healthier lives. My decision to choose a career in psychiatry was solidified in medical school when I came to recognize the importance of mental health, and how it interacts with physical heath. This has given me the opportunity to treat patients with an understanding of how psychological, social, and biological factors impact their overall health. For more detailed information about various psychiatric conditions, the links listed on this web page are excellent resources.

Background Information

I grew up in Southern California, and I’ve lived in the Sacramento area since 1995, when I joined Kaiser Permanente. I chose Kaiser because of its reputation as a leader in health care. Working here has provided me with a very supportive environment. Since I don’t have to deal with the day-to-day business aspects of a medical practice, I am free to focus my attention on patient care. I have a great deal of autonomy here so that I can make the treatment decisions that I feel are in my patients’ best interests. Furthermore, I feel blessed to be part of an outstanding department staffed with excellent and caring mental health providers. I look forward to continuing my career here indefinitely.

My Practice Philosophy

Patients are much more to me than just their diagnoses. Because all patients are unique, their treatments should be individually tailored. My approach is therefore patient-centered rather than disease-centered. Professionally speaking, my greatest interest is in psychopharmacology – the treatment of mental disorders with medications. However, it is important to remember that these conditions are usually complex, having psychological and social components, as well as a biological basis. Often times, medication alone is not enough. In these cases, it is important that a psychiatrist work as part of team with other professionals including therapists and health educators. Ultimately, however, my patients are the most important members of the team. I strongly believe that patients do best when they take an active role in their health care. Patients who are more involved in making decisions and who take steps toward a healthy lifestyle tend to be the most satisfied with their health care. As a Kaiser Permanente physician, I want to be your partner in health.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
