My Specialty and Why I Chose It

I am an optometrist. Doctors of optometry (OD) are the primary health care professionals for the eye. Optometrists examine, diagnose, treat, and manage diseases, injuries, and disorders of the visual system, the eye, and associated structures as well as identify related systemic conditions affecting the eye.

Doctors of optometry prescribe medications, low vision rehabilitation, vision therapy, spectacle lenses, contact lenses, and perform certain surgical procedures.

Optometrists counsel their patients regarding surgical and non-surgical options that meet their visual needs related to their occupations, vocations, and lifestyle.

An optometrist has completed pre-professional undergraduate education in a college or university and four years of professional education at a college of optometry, leading to the doctor of optometry (O.D.) degree. Some optometrists complete an optional residency in a specific area of practice.

Optometrists are eye health care professionals, state-licensed to diagnose and treat diseases and disorders of the eye and visual system.

My Qualifications

I graduated from Brigham Young University in 1977 and from the Southern California College of Optometry in 1981. I spent 8 years as an active duty United States Air Force (USAF) Chief Clinical Optometrist and 22 years as a USAF Reservist serving as a staff optometrist, chief of optometry, administrative officer, inspector, hospital commander and deputy group commander. I have worked in a private clinical setting as well as being a staff optometrist since 1988 and full time at Kaiser Permanente since 1996.

My Practice Philosophy

I was raised in a farming community in Idaho where I learned hard work, discipline, communication, caring, and compassion for your neighbor, no matter what the age. When a patient is in the exam room, I believe the patient is the only person I have at that moment and your concerns are the most important issues I have to deal with at the time. I love assisting and advising all my patients on improving their vision, taking care of their ocular and medical health.

My Tenure with Kaiser Permanente

I really appreciate the coordinated medical care that is available for all of my patients in the Kaiser Permanente medical system. Being able to refer to other specialties and assure all of our members are receiving the best medical care is comforting.

I have the freedom to practice medicine the way I want. No one tells me what I can or can’t do. At the same time, I really value the availability of information I can get from my large group of colleagues that help me. Educational opportunities, information technology, research opportunities, fundamentally ethical approach, evidence-based, helpful staff, leadership by physicians, close cooperation with hospital, attention to quality, prevention, close cooperation among physicians - "THE TEAM APPROACH".

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
