About Me

I attended UC Berkeley and received a bachelor’s degree in molecular and cell biology with the intention of continuing on to medical or veterinary school. While trying to make a choice as to which career to pursue, I joined the army reserve as a combat field medic to explore the field of medicine. What I discovered in the army were the fields of advanced practice nursing, specifically nurse anesthesia. I liked the approach that the nursing profession takes towards health care and the patient. I also appreciated the many possible specialties available to registered nurses in advanced practice.

I like the fact that the practice of nurse anesthesia allows me to focus on one patient at a time, practice my profession somewhat independently, and have variety in my clinical experience. CRNA's provide anesthesia for many different types of procedures, using a large variety of techniques. CRNA's are also widely utilized in health care, so it is possible to choose from many different work environments and practice styles when finding employment.

For my anesthesia training, I attended Samuel Merritt University in Oakland. During my residency, I rotated through many different hospitals and was impressed with Kaiser Permanente, particularly with the department at the Diablo Service Area (Deer Valley, Martinez, Pleasanton, and Walnut Creek). Kaiser Permanente seemed to allow CRNA's some freedom in their practice, while fostering a strong team environment. Advice or a second opinion can be readily obtained when it is sought. I pursued employment here because the staff appeared to work particularly well together and the department seemed to value and utilize their CRNA's.

I enjoy all aspects of anesthesia care, but am particularly interested in anesthesia as it applies to obstetrics. Walnut Creek and Deer Valley have a very busy combined obstetrical practice that demands a dedicated anesthesia service. This and the fact that my wife works as a registered nurse in the labor and delivery department were important factors when I was choosing employers. We are occasionally fortunate enough to be able to work together in providing care to the same patients.

When I am not working I like to spend time with my family doing such activities as bicycling, running, backpacking, camping, motorcycling, or SCUBA diving. I also participate in triathlon and running events.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
