About My Practice

I am a licensed clinical psychologist (PSY 18076) that focuses upon helping people who experience chronic and persistent pain. Living in pain can be extremely challenging and often very disruptive to many aspects of people’s lives. I work within a multidisciplinary framework of psychologists, physical therapists, anesthesiologists and a nurse practitioner to aid those who suffer from chronic pain. This not only includes the physical toll, but also the emotional and social toll.

What type of therapy do I use?

I primarily work from a cognitive-behavioral model of therapy called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT - pronounced as one word). This therapy combines the acceptance of one’s condition and mindfulness to help those in need make committed actions in meaningful and valued directions. This is done through a sense of openness to one’s experience and cognitive flexibility. Mindfulness is a kind of nonjudgmental, present-centered awareness in which each thought, feeling, or physical sensation (such as pain) that arises in the attention field is acknowledged and accepted as it is. This approach to living in pain has been shown to offer significant relief from the suffering that often accompanies a life with pain. I also have specific interests in evolutionary physical fitness, diet and sleep both professionally and personally. It is my perspective that a good mind-body connection requires us to be “good animals” and live according to our evolutionary patterns. This includes intermittent exercise interspersed with plenty of rest, sleep and the abundant consumption of whole foods.
