My Specialty and Why I Chose It

I am a senior outpatient physical therapist with Kaiser Permanente. I focus on orthopedic injuries. This means the majority of my patients have hurt themselves with some sort of physical activity, such as work, sports, or other recreational activity. As a physical therapist, I provide education, exercises, and some “hands-on” care to help patients regain their range of motion, strength, and function. In addition to helping patients gain their maximum potential, I also like to focus on helping patients prevent injuries and disabilities from the start. I decided to become a physical therapist after working at a ski resort and wondering what became of the injured patients we helped off the hill.

My Qualifications

Doctorate of Philosophy Human Services Capella University
Master of Science Physical Therapy Wichita State University
Bachelor of Science Recreation Administration California State University - Sacramento

My Practice Philosophy

I believe every individual is responsible for his or her own body. As a medical professional, I can help the patient reach his or her maximum potential. I can teach the patient exercises and body mechanics to reach his or her highest functional outcome. Unfortunately, I cannot do the work for the patient. Medicine is a team approach between the medical professionals and the patient. In short, I help patients help themselves.

My Tenure with Kaiser Permanente

I’ve been with Kaiser Permanente since the summer of 2010. In today’s health care climate there is constant change in the health care industry. After doing some research of where health care has been and where it appears to be going, I see Kaiser Permanente on the forefront compared to other health care organizations in California. Kaiser Permanente has managed to develop a system that works for both the patient and the medical professional. I believe that Kaiser Permanente patients get better quality of care than patients seeking care at other medical facilities. Being a big believer in quality of care and patient satisfaction, Kaiser Permanente seemed like a natural fit for me.

On a Personal Note. . .

I was born and raised in Germany until age 12, which is when my family moved to Sacramento, CA. I have an older sister and a younger brother. We were fortunate to grow up in a very outdoor oriented family. Our family went camping, hiking, snow skiing and sailing. In high school I did all the typical sports: cross country, track, volleyball and softball. In college I rowed for CSU Sacramento. During college my jobs were teaching rowing, sailing, and snow skiing. These days I still enjoy the outdoors, but am usually stuck inside throughout the work week. Having additional training as an emergency medical technician (EMT), has allowed me to use my medical skills outdoors as well. I am a search and rescue volunteer and at times work at an aquatic center. Having the additional EMT training has allowed me to be more aware if a patient presents with an underlying medical condition, which may not be typical in the orthopedic physical therapy setting.

Besides the outdoors, I enjoy travelling, helping others through volunteer work, and animals. I have travelled through most of Europe and driven across the United States. My love for animals has led me to volunteer at a local animal shelter.

In short, I love my work, but I also have a great life outside of work. On the weekends you can find me volunteering at the animal shelter, being on a search for a lost hiker, or just out with my dogs.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
