Hello! - Welcome to my Kaiser Permanente physician home page. I am a Reconstructive Plastic Surgeon based at the Oakland Medical Center. Generally, I see patients referred by either their primary doctor or another surgeon for specific types of issues. Plastic Surgery is a problem-solving type of surgical subspecialty and I enjoy the challenges each patient brings.
The deformities requiring operations of this class are necessarily so dissimilar in different cases; everyone becomes a separate study to the surgeon and opens a fresh field for the exercise of his mind in restoring the lost or deformed parts.
-- Joseph Pancoast
I see children and adults and men and women. I help with problems all over the body. I reconstruct injuries to the soft tissues, extensive scars, large birthmarks or vascular malformations, complex wounds, and problems due to burn injuries, among others. I do skin cancer excisions in sensitive areas like the face or ears if removal will cause a difficult problem maintaining a normal appearance or function. I often work with other surgeons to help reconstruct the body after cancer or other operations - especially breast cancer. At Oakland, we currently perform implant or your own soft tissue breast reconstructions - but do not yet do microsurgery. We also perform breast reduction surgeries for women with extremely large breasts and related problems. There are very strict criteria for eligibility for breast reduction - your referring doctor will explain this in more detail when she or he makes the referral.
All surgeries carry risks - the choice to undergo a surgical procedure is based on the comparison of the potential risks to potential benefits. If you are eligible for a surgery, we will discuss the risks, benefits and alternatives to the procedure in detail so you can make an informed choice.
I have been with Kaiser since September of 2005. We used to live in Chicago. However, I grew up in Northern California, and am happy, finally, to be back. My wife Amy (she’s a doctor, too), our son Simon, and I live in San Francisco. We are Kaiser patients, too.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
