Welcome to my home page!

My name is Brian Bane. Welcome to my home page. I am happy to be a member of the anesthesia department here in San Rafael, and I look forward to meeting you when you visit us.

I realize that it can be very stressful to have surgery (or any procedure which requires anesthesia). My goal is to make your anesthetic as safe and stress-free as possible.

To the left of the screen I have provided a few links which you may find of interest, especially if you are going to need anesthesia care. There you can find answers to a lot of questions, and read about some of the anesthesia options which may be available for you. Please try the link entitled Learn More About Anesthesia. It will guide you to a lot of good information.

When you come to your appointment with the preoperative nurse educator, you will also meet with me, or another member of the anesthesia department. During this meeting, we can discuss your anesthesia options in further detail. In the clinic we will also answer any questions you have concerning anesthesia, and order any necessary tests or medical consults in preparation for your upcoming surgery. We look forward to helping you.

If you have surgery on short notice, a member of the anesthesia department will meet you in the hospital, on the day of surgery. We can talk with you about your anesthetic choices at that time.

A little bit about me:
I grew up in the Boston area, a middle child in a large, Irish Catholic family. I always wanted to become a doctor, and anesthesia was a good fit for my personality. I spent a year in Los Angeles during my internship, and realized that California is a wonderful place to live. I married a California native, and we eventually settled down in San Rafael. I joined Kaiser San Francisco’s anesthesia department in 1989, and transferred to San Rafael in 1998.

While I am not at work, I enjoy spending time with my family. My wife and I have two teen aged sons, who are a constant blessing, in spite of some adolescence. I also enjoy rowing, biking, hiking, camping, and have recently taken up karate. I love to read and collect books. I would call myself a bibliophile, but my family calls me a bibliomaniac.

My Credentials

Medical school Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, Maywood, IL
Internship University of Southern California School of Medicine, Los Angeles, CA
Residency Brigham and Womens Hospital, Boston, MA
Fellowship Brigham and Womens Hospital, Boston, MA
Board certification Anesthesiology, American Board of Anesthesiology

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
