About Me

I am delighted to be back working with Kaiser Members at the Oakland CDRP since February 2009. This is my third position with Kaiser; I was a medical intern at Kaiser San Francisco in 1977 and from 1994 thru 1997 I was the sub-regional Chief of Inpatient Psychiatry for the West Bay based in Kaiser Redwood City. It was also my good fortune to have worked as an inpatient contract psychiatrist for West Bay Kaiser facilities from 1984 until 1994. In 1997 I left California to become a Regional Psychiatrist with the Department of State and had the opportunity to serve our government in Bangkok, Cairo and Nairobi. Living overseas in third world countries was a wonderful experience for my family and I but we are happy to be back in California since 2006.

For the past two decades I have had a special interest in treating patients who suffer from both addictive and mental health disorders and that is the primary focus in my current position. Both addiction and mental illness can cause immense suffering for individuals and families. It is very common for these illnesses to co-exist in patients and this can make a successful treatment approach more challenging and complex. While the work can be very difficult at times it is wonderful to celebrate the many successes of my patients who have managed to achieve lasting recovery and freedom from the symptoms of troubling mental health disorders.
