Thank you for visiting my home page

I think this is a great way for Kaiser Permanente members to get familiar with the physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants who provide their care.

About me

I was raised on Long Island, New York, in a suburban community. I attended Stony Brook University in New York where I was preparing myself for a career in science. After two years of working in various research laboratories on campus, I realized I really wanted to pursue a field where I could combine my interest in science as well as working with people. I decided on nursing. I attended Columbia University School of Nursing in New York where I completed a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) in 1980.

After working for one year at Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, I decided to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area. I was fascinated with the physical beauty of California. My plan was to see all the National Parks and natural points of interests in the West. Over the past 25 years that I have lived in California, I have visited most of the National Parks either through backpacking or car camping.

My first jobs in California were at Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley in the Intensive Care Unit, and the Emergency Department at Providence Hospital as a staff Registered Nurse. After working for several years in the hospital setting, I decided to advance as a nurse and practice more independently. It was a natural progression to complete my Master’s Degree in Nursing at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). There is where I also received my certification to be an Adult Health Nurse Practitioner (NP). After graduating from UCSF in 1988, I worked in private practice for a primary care group in Concord as a Nurse Practitioner. A year later, I was offered a job in the Emergency Department at Kaiser Permanente in Walnut Creek. I was the first NP to work in the Emergency Department. A physician colleague and myself developed the role of the NP in that setting. It was both challenging and rewarding to work in that fast-paced environment. Eight years later I transferred to Pleasanton where I worked in the Minor Injury and Illness Center.

During my first 11 years at Kaiser Permanente, I gained much experience in the care of patients with acute orthopedic injuries. I was excited when I was offered a position in the Orthopedic Surgery Department in 2001. I have a variety of responsibilities as an Orthopedic NP. I evaluate new patients with a many different orthopedic conditions. I follow patients with fractures. We work as a team in the Orthopedic Department. As part of the team, I do the pre-operative physical exams for patients who are to undergo orthopedic surgical procedures as well as provide the post-operative care for these patients. When the surgeon is not available in the clinic (usually in the operating room) I will provide care for their patients. Many of the surgeons I work with will refer their patients to me for their injections. As an Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) I assist the surgeons in the operating room where we do our Total Joint Replacements. I also assist in our procedure room where the surgeons perform hand surgeries (carpal tunnel releases, trigger finger releases, removal of masses). As you can see my job is multi-faceted. I enjoy the variety of my work. What I most enjoy is working with people. I am committed to doing my best to provide you with quality care. Once we have established a working relationship, any phone messages can be directed to myself or the Medical Assistant I work with. Together we will assist you in any way we can.

In addition to seeing patients for the Orthopedics Department, I also serve as Associate Clinical Professor at the Masters Nursing Program at UCSF. I am married to a wonderful man who is an excellent 5th grade teacher in a public school. We have two children, a son and daughter. Both children keep my husband and I busy with after school and family activities. We enjoy spending time together as a family. I also like hiking and cycling.

My educational background and board certification are as follows:

Undergraduate Education: BS in Nursing, graduated with honors, Columbia University, New York, New York
Nurse Practitioner Education: MSN from University of California, San Francisco School of Nursing
Certification: Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA), University of California, Los Angeles
Certification: Adult Health Nurse Practitioner, University of California, San Francisco
Credentials: Adult Nurse Practitioner, American Nurses Credentialing Center

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
